Java is an object-oriented, high-level, class-based programming language with as few implementation dependencies as possible. Java is a general-purpose programming language with the goal of allowing programmers to write once and run anywhere (WORA). This means that compiled Java code can run on any platform that supports Java without needing to be recompiled. Most of the time, Java applications are compiled into bytecode that can run on any Java virtual machine (JVM), no matter what computer architecture it runs on. Although Java's syntax is similar to that of C and C++, it lacks some low-level features. Traditional compiled languages typically lack dynamic capabilities like reflection and runtime code modification, which are provided by the Java runtime. According to GitHub, Java was one of the most widely used programming languages in 2019—particularly for client–server web applications—with 9 million developers.
At Sun Microsystems, James Gosling was the primary developer of Java. It was released in May 1995 as a key component of the Java platform developed by Sun Microsystems. Sun initially distributed the class libraries, virtual machines, and Java compilers that served as the reference implementation under proprietary licenses. Sun had relicensed most of its Java technologies under the GPL-2.0-only license as of May 2007, adhering to the specifications of the Java Community Process. Although Oracle offers its own HotSpot Java Virtual Machine, the OpenJDK JVM, which is free and open-source software used by the majority of developers and is the default JVM for almost all Linux distributions, serves as the official reference implementation.
The Java language project was started by James Gosling, Mike Sheridan, and Patrick Naughton in June 1991. Java was initially developed for interactive television, but the digital cable television industry at the time considered it too advanced. The initial name of the language was "Oak," after the oak tree that stood in front of Gosling's office. Gosling designed Java with a C/C++ syntax that system and application programmers would find familiar. Initially known as Green, the project was eventually renamed Java after Java coffee, a type of Indonesian coffee.
